About the Department
English was one of the first five subjects introduced when the college was started as a Pre-University institution in the year 1971. Ever since the college was granted permission to open Degree classes from 1975, English had been introduced as an Honours course during 1998-99 sessions. Currently, there are five faculties teaching in the department.
The Department of English, as its mode of teaching, imparts fun learning by taking classes at the college lawn in replacement of normal classroom teaching method. This has been practised time and again in every semester. Discussions were had during these open-air classes especially at winter seasons when both teachers and students enjoy having classes in the sun.
As one of its best practices, the department had adopted a KYES (Kno w Your English Students) programme since 2019 which is basically very similar to the mentor-mentee system which the college has adopted earlier under the supervision of Students’ Support and Progression Committee, whereby students were divided into groups, and were assigned to one teacher each from the department. The central idea of this practice is to know the students better, their welfare, academic performances, personal challenges, etc with the increasing number of students’ enrolment in the 1st semester each year.
